Often times a paragraph should begin with a linking sentence to the previous paragraph, if possible. This adds greater coherence and unity to the paper as topics flow from one to another.

In the paragraph following the introduction this isn't as readily possible. So in that case, it is better to introduce one of the ideas stated in the thesis as a starting point for the body paragraphs.
